Repairs to Old, Rare, and Valuable Books (including early New Zealand books)

The Bookbindery has always been well respected for book repair and book restoration. As a result we are regularly entrusted with old, rare, and valuable books.

Over many, many years book dealers, collectors, museums, libraries, archives and individuals, too, have trusted us with these volumes.
For example, way back in 1981 David Thomas bookshop brought us a copy of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Aurora Australis to us for repair. The book’s subsequent sale obtained for the bookshop the highest price they ever obtained for any volume, and they specifically mentioned it to the newspaper, when the shop finally closed in 1997.

Another example is the book shown at the right. This is probably the oldest volume we have ever worked on. It is Baldi’s Commentary from 1545. We repaired this in 2013. It is one of a few different volumes we have worked on from the 1500s!

We often work on early New Zealand volumes. They are often restored as family treasures rather than because of their monetary value. However, because they are also often sort after by collectors, and some sell for quite significant amounts, they have also been included in this heading.

We have also worked on many very old and interesting Bibles. Some examples of this are shown on our page Holy Bible and Family Bible Repair. More of our work on old volumes is shown on our page General Book Repair. On many of our many of the Book Repair pages you can see how damaged pages have been repaired, but visiting Document Repair may also help to show what results can be achieved. As an added protection or as an attractive alternative to repair we also manufacture protective storage boxes see Protective Boxes and Cases.
